Sewn bellows are not a common use in and around the house but is mostly a cost effective way in the engineering field.
Hydraulic cylinders and shafts are protected from dust and heat through the use of sewn bellows which are clamped or strapped around the parts that needs to be protected.
Apart from keeping dust and heat away from certain working hydraulic cylinders and shafts, bellows can also be used for keeping oil and grease from splatting all over the place where they rotate at high velocities.
Sewn bellows can be part of shafts or cylinders where the shafts or cylinders are just replaced as a whole and sent out for repairs with their bellows still attached. In certain cases where the bellows can be removed via zip or velgro you can do inspections on shafts or seals and then just replace the bellow without having to remove the complete working component.
